What is the role of the Writing Place?

Welcome to the College of Humanities, Writing Place (WP). The WP is an important high-impact support intervention in the College of Humanities. The WP is located within the Office of the College Dean of Teaching and Learning. The WP provides academic writing support to all registered undergraduate and postgraduate honours/ diploma/certificate students in the College of Humanities.

The WP Tutors focus on assisting students:

• To build and augment your academic literacy skills, which are essential to enable you to understand and engage with your reading and writing.
• To assist you in refining your essay and assignment structure, cultivate a sound grasp of important academic concepts and nurture critical reading and writing skills.
• To support you refine essay drafts, understanding the topic, constructing compelling arguments, and facilitating the development of excellent academic writing skills.
• To enhance your academic language, guide you in mastering referencing techniques, and train you to navigate all the intricacies of academic integrity and avoid plagiarism.
• To encourage you to maximise critical thinking in your academic writing and reading for meaning.

Who we are?

The WP Coordinator oversees the daily operations in the WP. WP Team Leaders oversee the WP Tutors and Walk-in venues on each campus. The WP Tutors are senior postgraduate students who will help you refine your draft versions of essays, assessments or assignments through their constructive and supportive feedback to help you develop your academic writing and critical analysis skills.

Our mode of delivery:

We offer group and individual sessions and virtual and contact consultations. We are not an editing service, but we can help you improve your academic writing. We also offer workshops/ seminars on academic writing, referencing and literature searches, topic analysis, etc.

How do I submit my assignment and essay for review?

Upload your fully typed draft of your essay at least six days (working days) before the due date. Click this link https://forms.office.com/r/xgPk0kQjzs 

• We are not obliged to review essays submitted too close to the assessment due date (four or less days).
• Please upload your essay/ assignment questions, guidelines, marking rubric, or any other details the lecturer/ tutor provided. This will enable the Writing Place tutor to provide you with the support you need.
• A Writing Place tutor will be assigned to provide tailored assistance through face-to-face or online sessions. The WP Tutor will provide feedback within 48 hours (two to three days) of being assigned the assessment/ assignment to review.

What types of feedback will you receive? Includes, but not limited to

• Referencing and in-text citations – peer-reviewed sources
• Writing style and clarity
• Format and presentation (line spacing, word count etc as listed in the module guideline)
• Structure and organisation
• Grammar, expressions and phrasing
• Clarity in the introduction, conclusion and body of the assessment
• Argument, writing with evidence, and critical analysis
• Did you understand the topic or question, and respond to this?
