UKZN fourth-year Bachelor of Education in Senior and Further Education Training student, Mr Nicholas Kisten is among the GradStar Top 100 competitors.
His peer, Mr Nathan Pillay, who achieved the top 10 student ranking in 2022, served as an inspiration to him.
Kisten shared that the top five hundred students were announced in July, followed by tests, video interviews, and future fit academy entries, ultimately leading to the top 100 in October. Amongst many of his other passions, his other interests include helping learners learn- making a difference, fostering curiosity, building meaningful relationships and introducing creativity in teaching to the learned society.
He said being part of the GradStar Top 100 can provide several benefits to individuals, especially recent graduates and young professionals. ‘These include recognition, networking opportunities, career opportunities, skills development, personal growth, resume enhancement, visibility, increased credibility, and access to scholarships and grants,’ he said.
He considers his family his biggest support system, and he is the first person in his family to attend a tertiary institution, saying, ‘I am incredibly appreciative of my family, especially my father, Reverend Derek Kisten who has always been a source of love, support, and wisdom. My brother, Jedael Ethan Kisten, and my beloved mother, Cecelia Ann, have always supported and believed in me. The constant devotion of the Kisten family is responsible for my accomplishment.’
Kisten expressed gratitude for the opportunity to travel to Sandton, Johannesburg, with all expenses paid, and the confidence it has given him.
Apart from experiencing hardships, such as health issues in the family, he is optimistic about the advantage of being in the top 100, noting the unemployment statistics in the country. ‘I am grateful to know that there is hope at the end of the storms,’ he added.
Kisten strongly believes that there is something for everyone and has encouraged his peers to live life with purpose, love genuinely, and always remain hopeful.
