Go-getter, Ms Zanele Myeni of the School of Education has bagged a scholarship named after distinguished educationist and former Vice-Chancellor, member of the UKZN Council, and recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University, Professor Hugh Africa.

‘I have always been at the top of my class and achieved eight distinctions in matric,’ said Myeni, who credits her success to being committed and goal-driven.

Noting UKZN’s dedication to academic quality as well as holistic growth, she added that its inclusive and diverse environment has fostered her intellectual curiosity and expanded her perspectives.

Myeni’s long-term objective is to be a committed educator in the fields of Accounting, Economic Management Science, and Creative Arts where she will encourage students to engage in independent thinking and foster their ability to apply the knowledge they gain at university in the world of work.

She thanked all those that smoothed her path, particularly her parents and former teachers at Sinethezekile Combined School in Jozini. She added that the scholarship ‘will ease my financial burden while also inspiring me to work hard.’

Myeni offered the following words of advice to her peers: ‘Embrace every opportunity for growth, both inside and outside the classroom. Seek mentors who can guide you and help you navigate challenges. Engage actively with your community and strive to make a positive impact. Most importantly, never underestimate the value of your dreams and aspirations.’
