Bachelor of Education in Further Education and Training graduate, Mr Ayanda Ximba celebrates finally completing his degree and takes us through his long academic journey.

Ximba explained that he has been a student at UKZN for six years due to health concerns. In addition to all the other reasons he wanted to join the University, he said that inconsistency concerning his health motivated him to enrol at UKZN, which is close to his home in Greytown, in case of an emergency.

‘In addition to the University’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence and the fact that its research degrees have international standing, I chose to study at UKZN because of its recognition as one of the top research-focused universities in the world,’ said Ximba.

He expressed his gratitude for the support offered by academic leaders and staff from the disability unit as well as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities, Professor Nhanhla Mkhize, which included allowing him extra time during examinations and enhancing his abilities.

He also acknowledged his family’s support: ‘My family were always by my side, cheering me on as I battled with my health. Their tremendous support made me persevere.

‘I’m also thankful to my mother who made sure that when I did not have funding, she found a way to get the money for me to register at the University. Thank you so much, Mama.’

Ximba is now looking to enter the world of work so that he can improve his family’s situation.
