Norwegian Project/Placement of student teachers in rural schoolsProject Purpose (Vision of the Project)
A partnership model. To place student teachers in rural schools for
their School Experienceso that they can support rural development and
also develop  positive attitudes to teaching in rural schools

Who is the Target Community
PGCE and BEd 4th year students and rural schools with which the SED can establish partnerships

What is the scale of the project? (How many people does it benefit / Or how many communities does it involve / any other measure of scale)
Approximately 70 students have been placed in 4 partner schools over the past 3 years

The life span of the project: When did it start? Does it have an end date in view?

Then Norwegian funding ended at the end of 2008 however the project is being continued on a limited scale in 2009

Evaluated impact or influence, or predicted potential impact
Partnerships extend beyond student placements.  Some students now have
permanent employment in the partner schools. Teacher from the schools
have enrolled for further qualifications with UKZN. Teachers from rural
schools have access to UKZN resources and resources from other partner
schools

What cooperation is there with other organisations in this outreach?
The partnership with one school includes a field trip for all PGCE
students on the PMB campus at the beginning of each year.Links to
business  and charitable organisations have been established to support
further development in schools.

How is the research potential of the outreach being exploited?
Papers have been presented at international and local conferences and symposia. Journal articles have been published

How many Students are involved in the Project
Approximately 70 to date

Spinoffs?
This is a model that has the potential to be expanded with support from the DoE and SACE, who have already expressed a keen interest
