AMD Graduate, Class of 2021

Sizwe Lindani Xulu

Being part of the African Music and Dance Programme was one of the most transformative experiences of my life.

I entered the programme as a young student with a passion for music, but I graduated as an artist, researcher, and custodian of culture.

Some of my most memorable experiences include ensemble performances, community engagement projects, and international cultural exchange opportunities. Learning Ingoma, Isicathamiya, Maskandi guitar, and other indigenous musical traditions taught me discipline, teamwork, confidence, and perseverance.

The programme profoundly influenced my personal, academic, artistic, and professional development. It grounded me in my identity as a young Zulu man while expanding my understanding of African music as a rich body of knowledge, history, and philosophy.

AMD also equipped me with practical skills in performance, dance, drumming, vocal technique, and cultural research. These experiences continue to inspire my dream of establishing a Maskandi music company that will nurture and promote young talent in KwaZulu-Natal.

My hope for AMD’s future is that it continues to grow, receive greater recognition and support, and provide more opportunities for students to engage with the cultural and creative industries.

I will always be proud to be an AMD alumnus.
