About the School

Through excellence in research, academic learning and practical skills, the School of Arts combines critical inquiry with artistic practice in ways that engage with our contemporary global, African and South African contexts. Our School comprises a diverse range of disciplines which include

Drama, English, French, isiZulu, Linguistics, Media, Music, Fine

Arts and Digital Art.

The School, located on the Howard College and Pietermaritzburg campuses, is internationally renowned for its vibrant performance collaborations and community engagement, including events hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts, the Elizabeth Sneddon and Hexagon theatres, the Jack Heath Gallery, the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music and the Opera Studio. Our graduates are well sought after and excel in careers in the various fields of Music; Media and Cultural Studies, Marketing, Journalism, Editing and Publishing, Public Relations and Corporate Communication as well as Advertising; the various areas of specialisation in Drama and Performance Studies; and Teaching and Learning in Education at both school and university levels.

Some of our notable alumni include musicians Zakes Bantwini and Holly Rey; TV Presenter Ayanda Mpama; Fitness Celebrity Sibahle Mpisane, and even Actress Jessica Nkosi.
