College of Humanities – Mellon Early Career Scholars Programme 

5 Postdoctoral Fellowships (One year) 

3 Doctoral Scholarships (Up to Four Years) 

9 Masters Scholarships (Up to Two years)

Applications are invited for 5 Postdoctoral Fellowships, 3 Doctoral Scholarships and 9 Masters Scholarships attached to Mellon Early Career Fellows in the College of Humanities at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. 

Based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Howard College, Pietermaritzburg and Edgewood campuses), the successful applicants will strive for excellence in the quality and transformative impacts of their research, work with leading Early Career Scholars involved in research on select topics in the arts, humanities and social sciences and uphold the highest ethical standards. 

Awards  

The Post-doctoral Fellowships are for 12 months and are valued at R 200 000 per annum. Applicants must have completed and excelled in their PhD degree and must undertake research in the areas in which the Early Career Fellows work. 

The Doctoral Scholarships provide support for up to 48 months and are worth R 135 000 per annum. They are renewable on progress of research and good performance. Applicants must have completed and excelled in their Masters degree in a discipline/field in which the Early Career Scholars work. 

The Masters Scholarships provide up to 24 months of support (seven scholarships) and 12 months of support (two scholarships) and are worth R105 000 per year. They are renewable annually on progress of research and good performance. Applicants must have completed and excelled in their Honours degree in a discipline/field in which the Early Career Fellows work.

Focus areas of Postdoctoral Fellowships and Scholarships 

Postdoctoral Fellowships and Doctoral and Masters scholarships are available in the following areas: 

  • English Studies, with a specific focus on African literature and Women in literature (linked to Dr Thulani Mkhize). 
  • English Studies, with a specific focus on Film Studies and Cultural Studies (linked to Dr Samiksha Laltha). 
  • Drama and Performance Studies (linked to Dr Noxolo Matete). 
  • Anthropology (linked to Dr Nokwanda Nzuza).  
  • Sociology, with a specific focus on Industrial Sociology and/or the Sociology of Work (linked to Dr Kathryn Pillay). 
  • Sociology, (with a specific focus on Menstruation and Menstrual Hygiene Management (linked to Dr Sinazo Nomsenge). 
  • Gender Studies (linked to Dr Gabisile Mkhize). 
  • Humanities/Social Sciences, with a specific focus on Culture and Language (linked to Dr Phindile Mayaba). 
  • Humanities/Social Sciences with a specific focus on African women and sexual agency (linked to Dr Nolwazi Ngcobo). 
  • Higher Education Studies, with a specific focus on Transformation and Decolonial studies (linked to Dr Mlamuli Hlatshwayo). 
  • Higher Education Studies, with a specific focus on Online Learning (linked to Dr Cedric Mpungose). 

Please note that applications are strictly restricted to the areas identified above and that successful candidates will be supervised by the scholars indicated above.  

Applications for professional Masters degrees, doctoral degrees and postdoctoral fellowships in areas such as Clinical, Counselling, Educational, Industrial and Research Psychology are specifically excluded, as are applications in any other disciplines or fields.

  • A one-page summary of your research interests  
  • An example of your academic writing either an article or chapter of your Honours long paper or thesis, your Masters research report or thesis or PhD thesis.
