Jabulani Self-Help Centre

Jabulani Self-Help Centre

CCMS most recent community outreach was donating items to the Jabulani Self-Help Centre. The Centre serves the impoverished communities surrounding Marianhill, and provides nutritious meals to hundreds of families every day. Over the Christmas period, staff and students from CCMS rallied together with the coordinator of ARROW to collect donations for Jabulani. In December 2010, a huge amount of food items was delivered to Jabulani. On 10 February 2011 the coordinator of ARROW, Mary Lange, the Programme Manager of CCMS, Eliza Govender, and a research assistant at CCMS, Sertanya Reddy, visited Jabulani to deliver hundreds of items of stationery for children at Jabulani who have no stationery items. Lange, Govender and Reddy also had the opportunity observe the different community empowerment projects which are operating. While the first two sets of donations to Jabulani were carried out by CCMS and ARROW members in their personal capacity, there is scope to formalize our outreach to Jabulani in 2011 on a more professional level.

2011:

  • ARROW and CCMS will explore the possibility of linking the Jabulani beading project with the DUT Jewellery project to generate income for poverty-stricken communities in the Marianhill area
  • Ongoing support for various needs of the community
  • Linking students with the Jabulani initiative to explore possible research areas.
