Project Purpose (Vision of the Project)
To promote and support the teaching and learning of reading
Who is the Target Community
Teachers, publishers, teacher educators, book sellers, Teacher administrators
What is the scale of the project? (How many people does it benefit / Or how many communities does it involve / any other measure of scale)
In KZN alone we have a membership of 260, but nationally it is much bigger. Annual Conference was held at UKZN in 2008. Regular regional meetings and workshops.
The life span of the project: When did it start? Does it have an end date in view?
RASA has been running nationally since 2003. KZN branch of RASA was formed from the KZN Reading Forum, an organization which has been in exsistence in the province for some years
Evaluated impact or influence, or predicted potential impact
The organization has been involved in the production of a number of DoE publications which deal with the promotion of reading, the most recent being the Reading Policy and the Reading Policy Guidelines
What cooperation is there with other organisations in this outreach?
DoE, Publishers, NGO’s (Read), Librarians
How is the research potential of the outreach being exploited?
RASA National Conference, staff members teaching and researching in the area of reading and literacy
How many Students are involved in the Project
Student competitions: Reading Teaching Pack, Story Writing, Story Telling. Assisted with the conference.
Spinoffs?
Develops interest in reading and the efficient effective teaching of reading among teachers, librarians, booksellers and publishers
